Starting with the new year, curbside recycling will be easier for most Greene County residents.
City residents will need only to sort out paper and cardboard from other recyclable materials. Packing a bin for curbside pickup will no longer be a bi-weekly jigsaw puzzle.
With dual stream recycling, residents can put cans, plastic and clear glass together in their green recycling bin rather than sort them separately. Paper and cardboard can be put together also. To make it even easier, residents who want an extra recycling bin can get one at their city hall at no charge.
The switch to dual stream recycling is the result of a survey done last February. Greene County Recycling Agency volunteers hope that making curbside recycling easier will make it more popular among residents. The large recycling bins will remain at Genesis Development in Jefferson for rural residents’ use.
The monthly $3.50 recycling fee paid by city residents will not change. The fee is added to water bills in every participating town, whether or not residents take advantage of curbside recycling. (Scranton does not participate in the program.)
The recycling schedule will remain the same. In Jefferson, curbside pickup will be done on regular garbage pickup days the second and fourth week of each month. Pickup in Grand Junction and Rippey will be the second and fourth Tuesday, and in Dana, Paton and Churdan the second and fourth Thursday. Refrigerator magnets with that information are available at locations around the county.
